Marcus: Welcome to the Long Island Senior Advisor podcast. I'm Marcus.
Dana: And I'm Dana. Today we're in the middle of Nassau County, looking at senior living in Syosset and Plainview.
Marcus: These two get searched together a lot. A parent lives in Syosset, the family starts looking, and suddenly half the listings say Plainview or Woodbury.
Dana: That's not a coincidence. When you look at what New York State actually licenses, the options are not where most people expect.
Marcus: So let's start there. What senior living is actually located in Syosset?
Dana: Inside Syosset itself, the state lists one licensed adult care facility. It's Christian Fellowship House on Split Rock Road, a not-for-profit adult home licensed for 45 residents.
Marcus: Just one?
Dana: Just one. And the state's capacity data for the second quarter of 2026 shows no assisted living certifications on that license. No ALR, no EALR, no SNALR.
Marcus: So what does an adult home without those certificates actually do?
Dana: It still provides long-term residential care. A room, meals and help with personal care. What it can't do is keep a resident who chronically needs hands-on help, like help to walk or to transfer.
Marcus: Where are the bigger places, then?
Dana: Right over the line in Woodbury, which borders Syosset to the east. Orchard Estate of Woodbury is licensed for 105, and it's certified as an assisted living residence, an enhanced one, and a special needs one for dementia.
Marcus: Okay, now Plainview. What's there?
Dana: Plainview has three licensed adult care facilities. Somerset Gardens on Sunnyside Boulevard is licensed for 160, with 38 special needs beds for dementia. Sunrise of Plainview on Old Country Road is licensed for 65, with 17 dementia beds.
Marcus: And the third?
Dana: Atria Plainview on Washington Avenue, licensed for 99. The state's capacity file lists no assisted living certifications for it, so ask them directly what level of care they can provide.
Marcus: So head to head. Syosset versus Plainview, which one actually has more options?
Dana: Plainview, by a wide margin. Its three communities hold 324 licensed spots. Syosset itself holds 45. That's why most Syosset families end up touring Woodbury and Plainview.
Marcus: Does size matter when you're choosing?
Dana: It can. Christian Fellowship House is the smallest by far. Some families want that. Others find it limiting if a parent's needs grow.
Marcus: What about inspections? How do I know if a place has problems?
Dana: The state profiles show the history. Between July 2022 and June 2026, Sunrise of Plainview had 3 citations across 7 inspections. Somerset Gardens had 11 across 13, plus a 2022 stipulation and order.
Marcus: Is that a red flag?
Dana: Not automatically. Most citations are paperwork or food service. But read the reports yourself, so you know which kind they were.
Marcus: Here's the one I hear most. My mom has dementia. Where can she actually live near Syosset or Plainview?
Dana: Look for a SNALR certificate. That's New York's special needs assisted living certificate, and it's what lets a residence serve people with Alzheimer's or other dementias under a state-approved plan.
Marcus: Who has one around here?
Dana: Somerset Gardens with 38 beds, Orchard Estate of Woodbury with 32, and Sunrise of Plainview with 17. That's 87 certified dementia beds. Nearby Jericho adds The Bristal at Jericho, with 45.
Marcus: What should I ask when I call?
Dana: How many of those beds are open, whether someone who moves in on the assisted living side can transfer later, and what happens if behaviors escalate.
Marcus: Let's talk money. What does assisted living cost near Syosset and Plainview?
Dana: Nobody publishes a Syosset or Plainview price. The closest real figure is CareScout's 2025 survey. The New York State median for assisted living is $7,110 a month. The national median is $6,200.
Marcus: And if it ends up being a nursing home?
Dana: In New York, the median is $15,528 a month for a semi-private room, and $16,729 for a private one.
Marcus: Who can help a family sort through all this for free?
Dana: Both hamlets are in the Town of Oyster Bay, in Nassau County. So the agency is the Nassau County Office for the Aging in Uniondale.
Marcus: And the hospitals, if this starts with a discharge?
Dana: Syosset Hospital and Plainview Hospital are both Northwell Health hospitals. Get the community's base rate and every care-level fee in writing before you sign.
Marcus: The full guide, with the comparison table and the state sources, is linked in the description. And a Long Island Senior Advisor can walk you through it for free.
Dana: Thanks for listening.
Marcus: See you next time.
What senior living is actually located in Syosset, NY?
Inside Syosset itself, New York State lists one licensed adult care facility: Christian Fellowship House on Split Rock Road, a not-for-profit Adult Home licensed for 45 residents. State capacity data for the second quarter of 2026 shows no Assisted Living Residence (ALR), Enhanced (EALR) or Special Needs (SNALR) certification on that license.
An Adult Home without those certificates still provides long-term residential care: a room, meals and help with personal care, under the state's adult care facility rules. What it cannot do is keep a resident who needs enhanced, hands-on care on a chronic basis. For a parent who mainly needs supervision, meals and medication reminders, that can be a good fit. For a parent who is already unsteady on their feet, ask about transfer policies before you move them in.
That matters because many families searching "senior living in Syosset" picture a large assisted living campus. The larger options sit just over the hamlet line. Woodbury, which borders Syosset to the east and shares its fire department, has Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a 105-bed Adult Home certified as an ALR, an EALR and a SNALR. Woodbury also has three nursing homes in the state roster: Woodbury Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (588 beds), White Oaks Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (200 beds) and Excel at Woodbury (123 beds).
Syosset Hospital, a 136-bed Northwell Health hospital at 221 Jericho Turnpike, is the local acute-care option. If your parent is being discharged from there, start with our Syosset senior care page, which maps the providers by care type.
What assisted living and memory care is in Plainview, NY?
Plainview has three licensed adult care facilities, and two of them carry every assisted living certification New York offers. Somerset Gardens on Sunnyside Boulevard is an Enriched Housing Program licensed for 160, certified ALR and EALR for all 160 and SNALR for 38. Sunrise of Plainview on Old Country Road is an Adult Home licensed for 65, certified ALR and EALR for all 65 and SNALR for 17.
Atria Plainview on Washington Avenue is an Adult Home licensed for 99. The state's capacity file lists no ALR, EALR or SNALR beds for it, so ask the community directly what level of care it can provide and what happens if your parent's needs grow.
Plainview also has Plainview Hospital, a 219-bed Northwell Health hospital at 888 Old Country Road, and Central Island Healthcare, a 202-bed nursing home. Our Plainview senior care page lists them together.
Syosset vs. Plainview: how do the options compare for a parent?
The short version: Plainview has more licensed assisted living capacity, and Syosset families usually end up touring Woodbury or Plainview. Here are the five closest communities, using the New York State Department of Health's facility roster and its quarterly capacity report for the second quarter of 2026.
| Community | Hamlet | State license | Licensed capacity | Assisted living certifications (beds) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christian Fellowship House | Syosset | Adult Home | 45 | None listed |
| Orchard Estate of Woodbury | Woodbury | Adult Home | 105 | ALR 105, EALR 105, SNALR 32 |
| Atria Plainview | Plainview | Adult Home | 99 | None listed |
| Somerset Gardens | Plainview | Enriched Housing Program | 160 | ALR 160, EALR 160, SNALR 38 |
| Sunrise of Plainview | Plainview | Adult Home | 65 | ALR 65, EALR 65, SNALR 17 |
Three things stand out. First, size: Christian Fellowship House is the smallest by far, which some families want and others find limiting. Second, aging in place: only communities with an EALR certificate can keep a resident who chronically needs hands-on help to walk, transfer or climb stairs, or who has unmanaged incontinence. Third, inspection history differs. Between July 2022 and June 2026, the state profile for Sunrise of Plainview shows 3 citations across 7 inspections, Orchard Estate 5 across 7, Atria Plainview 5 across 4, Christian Fellowship House 6 across 4, and Somerset Gardens 11 across 13, plus a 2022 stipulation and order. Read the reports themselves; most citations are paperwork or food service, but you should know which.
Where can a parent with dementia live near Syosset and Plainview?
Look for a SNALR certificate. In New York, a Special Needs Assisted Living Residence certificate is what authorizes an assisted living residence to serve people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias under a state-approved plan. If a community without one describes a memory care unit, ask which state certificate covers it.
Near Syosset and Plainview, three communities hold it: Somerset Gardens (38 SNALR beds), Orchard Estate of Woodbury (32) and Sunrise of Plainview (17). That is 87 certified dementia beds across the area. Nearby Jericho adds The Bristal at Jericho, certified for 45 SNALR beds.
Ask each community how many SNALR beds are open, whether a resident who moves in on the assisted living side can transfer later, and what happens if behaviors escalate. Our explainer on New York memory care certification covers what the certificate does and does not guarantee.
What does assisted living cost near Syosset and Plainview, and who helps?
